Capital Transit: Route 50 - Fourteenth Street

Photographs by R. Hill

This page contains pictures of Route 50, on 14th Street from Colorado Ave. in Northwest, to the Bureau of Printing and Engraving loop, in Southwest. Most were taken on the fateful date of January 27, 1962, which was unfortunately a day with lousy picture taking weather (hazy grey sky). Most of the other pictures were taken earlier in that same month.

There were originally 48 pictures in this series, which cover the line going from north to south. One is missing, two are provided courtesy of Don Galt, and three are provided courtesy of Ken Josephson.

This set of pictures is a wonderful change from the normal fan pictures which were three-quarter views of the streetcars. As you can see, these pictures are pretty useless for modeling the streetcars. But they are facsinating as a document of a slice of Washington in 1962, documenting the whole trolley line, not just a few streetcars.

There probably have been many changes since 1962 along 14th St., aside from the relatively static Federal edifices. The business district has replaced many buildings. There were unfortunate changes in Shaw in 1968. But the residential neighborhoods of upper 14th Street are much the same.

The images on this page have been extremely highly compressed for fast loading. Please click on any image to see a larger and less compressed version, usually 35 to 45 kilobytes in size.

Perhaps the employee is scolding Hill for blinding the motorman with flashbulbs?
Note the black motorman, still uncommon at this date.
